Business starts to take Web 2.0 tools seriously

  Olivier Verbeke

At each stage in its extraordinary development, the internet has encountered scepticism and resistance in boardrooms. Alarms have greeted each internet-based technology: would it distract employees or, worse, create unacceptable risks?

Over time, internet tools have been accommodated and have delivered huge benefits. But the same questions are now being asked about the latest generation of internet technologies, such as social networking tools.

Is Knowledge Management Just Overhead For Law Firms?

  Eric Rodriguez

Where does knowledge management fit in this climate for law firms? Key points:

  • The efficiency gains from KM should be welcomed when clients are more likely to challenge every item on the bill.
  • With layoffs (whether formal or performance-based) it is important to transfer the knowledge from individual lawyers to teams of lawyers.
  • KM can allow senior lawyers to delegate more to junior lawyers, allowing the senior lawyers to focus on client relationships.
  • Use KM to increase the level of client service.
  • With extra capacity is some areas, it is a great time for law firms to use that capacity on knowledge management activities.
  • Focus on expanding the use of existing systems instead of going out and purchasing something new.

Wikis In Law Firms

  Thomas Vander Wal

In early October 2008, with another legal KM practitioner, I gave a presentation on wikis to an experienced group of legal knowledge managers. Although about a third of the audience had wikis internally, there were still some people without significant practical experience with wikis.

The talk was organized in three parts. I started with an introduction to wikis, starting from the beginning, and highlighting their key features. My colleague then presented on her firm’s innovative use of Thoughtfarmer wikis. Then I discussed how my firm is leveraging Sharepoint wikis.

How Cisco’s CEO John Chambers is Turning the Tech Giant Socialist

  Gregory Culpin

Cisco, Chambers argues, is the best possible model for how a large, global business can operate: as a distributed idea engine where leadership emerges organically, unfettered by a central command.

Chambers wants nothing less than a total redesign of the corporation as we know it. Starting at the top: “You won’t have to depend on the CEO anymore.” About those Cisco execs who left, he says he came to realize that “some people need a command-and-control environment.” But that’s not the way of the future: “We now have a whole pool of talent who can lead these working groups, like mini CEOs and COOs. We’re growing ideas, but we’re growing people as well.” In fact, he says, “where I might have had two potential successors, I now have 500.”

Four Examples of Wikis Working within the Enterprise

  Bill Ives

“A recent Computerworld article, Wikis that work: Four IT departments get it right, provides early adopters success stories at Enel, ShoreBank, NYK, and SAP. The first two used Traction Team Page, NYK used Atlassian’s Confluence and the SAP example did not mention a vendor. This is a comprehensive article that goes into good detail on each example. I recommend looking at the complete coverage.”

IT Must Learn to Bend or Business Will Break

  Xavier Bartholome

“The current economic climate is having a devastating effect on almost every business around. In order to adapt to changing conditions and opportunities, businesses will need to use flexible, adaptable systems to survive. The days of expensive year-long implementations of behind-the-firewall software look to be behind us.”

Ten outstanding examples of business social media projects

  Gregory Culpin

Some companies have a much better appreciation of how to apply Web 2.0 than others. The projects described here have been selected to represent the diversity of innovations that fit under that broad heading. Some, such as Dell and PlusNet, show companies using Web 2.0 tools to find out how they can serve their customers better. Others, like Wachovia Bank and Best Buy, demonstrate the ability of Web 2.0 tools to help organisations work together better, document their implicit knowledge and even improve social cohesion.

But every example shows why it is imperative for enterprise IT departments to reach an understanding of Web 2.0, from both a technical and social perspective. Indeed, the advent of Web 2.0 gives IT a unique opportunity to become more innovative, more creative and a more valuable part of business. By enabling collaboration and fostering community, they can inject major value to the activities of business units as diverse as marketing, customer service and business development.

From K.M. to E2.0 - Part II - Best Practices

  Gregory Culpin

“Today, every larger company has locations spread geographically, and even if it is the same company, usually applying the same business rules, one will find that some of these remote locations are more successful than others.”
