The advice to derive from this research? Shut down your expensive document databases; they tend to do more harm than good. They are a nuisance, impossible to navigate, and you can’t really store anything meaningful in them anyway, since real knowledge is quite impossible to put onto a piece of paper.
Yet, do maintain your systems that help people identify and contact experts in your firm, because that can be beneficial, at least for people who lack experience. Therefore, make sure to only give your rookies the password.

Burton Group, a research and consulting firm focused on in-depth analysis of enterprise information technologies, has conducted a detailed field study analyzing social networking within the enterprise.
Almost universally, organizations participating in the study felt they were behind their competitors — or the market in general — when it came to internal social networking initiatives. Based on the results of this study, Burton Group concludes that such perceptions are unfounded. Many organizations are yet to make an enterprise-wide decision on social networking tools. Even in those organizations that have set a direction, many of those projects are in proof-of-concept or early stages of deployment.

The last couple of years I have had many conversations with a broad selection of mid-sized to large organizations. Some of these are customers of mine or potential customers while others are conversations I have had, but all having the similar discussion about social tools in the enterprise. What follows is a collection of snippets from those conversations regarding Microsoft SharePoint 2007, most are not publicly attributed as they were not intended to be “on the record”.

Where does knowledge management fit in this climate for law firms? Key points:
- The efficiency gains from KM should be welcomed when clients are more likely to challenge every item on the bill.
- With layoffs (whether formal or performance-based) it is important to transfer the knowledge from individual lawyers to teams of lawyers.
- KM can allow senior lawyers to delegate more to junior lawyers, allowing the senior lawyers to focus on client relationships.
- Use KM to increase the level of client service.
- With extra capacity is some areas, it is a great time for law firms to use that capacity on knowledge management activities.
- Focus on expanding the use of existing systems instead of going out and purchasing something new.

In early October 2008, with another legal KM practitioner, I gave a presentation on wikis to an experienced group of legal knowledge managers. Although about a third of the audience had wikis internally, there were still some people without significant practical experience with wikis.
The talk was organized in three parts. I started with an introduction to wikis, starting from the beginning, and highlighting their key features. My colleague then presented on her firm’s innovative use of Thoughtfarmer wikis. Then I discussed how my firm is leveraging Sharepoint wikis.

“Phil, it’s not as simple as you think. Organizations are living, breathing organisms. They are like people – with their own histories, dreams, desires, jealousies, traditions and habits. And they are made up of people, no two of whom are alike, while at the same time they share certain beliefs, values and behaviours. That all wraps up into what we call our “corporate culture,” and it’s worth more to us than a thousand desktop computers or a million mission statements. It’s what makes us a cohesive whole, a team-based organization that is not tripping over itself every second of every day.”
